The Minister of Finance, Audley Shaw phone bill amounted to $8.34 million during the period from March 2016 to February 2017. This information was given to the RJR news.
The finance Ministry had notified Audley Shaw about his high phone bill after the Ministry’s financial secretary got wind of RJR’s ATI request in March.
The three bill being the lowest for the Ministry was more than $5000, $22000, $68000. It was also noted that the highest bills were in the month of December, August and October.
The Ministry phone bill gradually increased from December, it was more than $838,000, August it was more than $1.5 million and by time it was October it reached more than $4.2 million.
The finance Ministry said Mr Shaw travelled in August and October for personal reasons. Mr Shaw was known to be involved in finalizing Jamaica’s Precautionary Standby Agreement with the International Monetary Fund.
It was later showed that the charges were due to data useage while roaming.
Mr Shaw phone was inspected and it showed that Mobile data roaming settings were not adjusted for use over wifi only. Later Mr Shaw was informed that he should use wifi more often. Mr Shaw has only paid $2.6 million for just personal roaming data useage.
The Finance Ministry instructed technocrats that government with unlimited calls and data services, they should be considering to set limits. Except when they travel aboard then special deals and services will be offered for them.
